Building Regional Connectivity and Electrification: The EU's Experience in Regional Power Market Integration and Support for the ASEAN Power Grid

Worldwide, the European Union partners with regional and national institutions to advance shared priorities, including energy interconnectivity and electrification, as part of its broader external cooperation. Under its Global Gateway strategy, the EU provides technical, regulatory and financing expertise to strengthen cross-border power trade, investment and clean electrification. It draws on its own experience integrating Europe's electricity market — through harmonised standards, market coupling and regulatory cooperation — and contributes this experience to global initiatives such as Electrify Now, a coalition the European Commission launched with partner governments, financial institutions and industry to raise electrification from just over 20% to 35% of final energy demand by 2035.

One example is ASEAN, where the EU supports the ASEAN Power Grid under the EU–ASEAN strategic partnership through programmes such as the Technical Assistance Facility to the Green Team Europe Initiative (TAF-GTEI) and the Sustainable Connectivity Package's Investment and Energy Facilities (SCOPE-IF, SCOPE-Energy). This support extends beyond grid interconnection to the wider electrification agenda that Electrify Now champions globally, and reflects, together with similar Team Europe Initiatives elsewhere, the EU's enduring commitment to secure, interconnected and sustainable power systems worldwide.
