Building Regional Connectivity and Electrification: The EU's Experience in Regional Power Market Integration and Support for the ASEAN Power Grid

The EU session's panel discussion will focus on three interlinked pillars of regional power system development: TSO cooperation, grid modernisation and the technologies needed to support higher levels of interconnection, and the market frameworks required to enable cross-border power trade. Drawing on the EU's experience integrating Europe's electricity markets, the panel has three objectives: first, to share lessons on TSO coordination, cross-border capacity allocation, and joint grid planning; second, to highlight the grid technologies and technical standards that underpin grid modernisation and higher-capacity interconnection; and third, to discuss the regulatory and institutional steps needed to advance energy market development under the ASEAN Power Grid. The session aims to inform ASEAN policymakers, grid operators, regulators, and industry stakeholders about practical pathways to accelerate regional power market integration and identify opportunities for continued EU–ASEAN cooperation on TSO cooperation, grid modernisation, and energy market development.
